Geneva is proud of its internationalism and its role as a center
for multilateral negotiation. The Swiss government and the City
and Canton of Geneva have a long-standing policy of encouraging
international organizations to establish offices here. They have
undertaken a number of measures to maintain the city's position
as a location for conducting negotiations and as a base for international
organizations. A number of organizations in Geneva exist specifically
to support and promote the development of Geneva as a center of
international activity and to assist newcomers in settling in.
The Geneva Welcome Center
The Geneva Welcome Center (Centre d'Accueil - Geneve Internationale)
was set up in 1996 to help international civil servants, diplomats,
and non-governmental organizations to get settled in the Geneva
region. A non-profit partnership between the City and State of Geneva
and the private sector, the center provides practical assistance
to newcomers, particularly with housing, schooling and other issues.
It answers specific questions which internationals have during their
stay in Geneva.
The Center assists non-governmental organizations which wish to
set up an office in Geneva with taxation and work permit issues,
and in some cases subsidization. It also encourages interaction
between "international Geneva" and the local community
through a variety of events and projects, including a monthly "happy
hour" bringing together internationals and people from the
local business community.
The Geneva Press Club
The Geneva Press Club was established in October 1997 and shares
the premises at the Villa La Pastorale with the Geneva Welcome Center.
It has a membership of around 600 individuals and 80 collective
members including businesses, international organizations, and diplomatic
missions. The aim of the center is to facilitate the spread of information
about Geneva and Switzerland in the Swiss and international media,
and to provide a less formal setting for encounters between the
press and major personalities. The Press Club organizes two to three
press conferences each week. It is also available to visiting press
for inquiries about contacts and addresses.
