I
am pleased to present the latest edition of the U.S. Missions
Briefing Book on International Organizations in Geneva. This publication
also available in an online version offers a unique
overview of key institutions located in Geneva.
The
process of updating this document has provided some interesting
insights into developments in multilateral diplomacy and its related
organizations. For example, perennial issues such as human rights
and non-proliferation are now debated in a context far-removed from
the bipolar world that existed when they were first put on the UN
agenda. The increasing importance and interdependence
of international health issues and trade liberalization underscore
the broad-based nature of todays multilateral issues and concerns.
Underlying
U.S. engagement in multilateral diplomacy is our belief that all
people need peace, security, freedom, human rights, democracy and
economic growth in order to prosper. To move the nations and peoples
of the world collectively in this direction, the United Nations
and its specialized agencies need to operate with a sense of purpose
and increased efficiency. It is the goal of the United States to
work with other member countries to achieve these goals.
This
book is dedicated to the people and institutions engaged in this
effort to produce a prosperous, peaceful world. Working together,
we can not only solve the problems of today, but also prepare for
the challenges of tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Kevin
